تعد کنيسة الحبشة واحدة من أقدم الکنائس في أفريقيا، إذ تأسست في النصف الأول من القرن الرابع الميلادي، ارتبطت منذ نشأتها کنيسة الحبشة بکنيسة الإسکندرية. استمرت العلاقة موصولة بينهما إلى أن ظهرت بعض الأصوات التي تنادي بضرورة فصم العلاقة الروحية بين الکنيستين. وتزامن ذلک مع شيوع فکرة أسطورية ظهرت خلال فترة الحروب الصليبية حول مملکة القديس يوحنا. الذي تقع مملکته خلف بلاد المسلمين. ومنذ أن انتشرت تلک الأخبار بدأ ملوک أوروبا في البحث عن تلک المملکة للتحالف معها لمواجهة القوى الإسلامية، وتبع ذلک التحالف جهود کبيرة بذلها رجال الدين اليسوعيين أملًا في تحويل کنيسة الحبشة عن مذهبها الأرثوذکيسة إلى المذهب الکاثوليکيThe Abyssinia Church is one of the oldest churches in Africa. It was founded in the first half of the fourth century AD. Since its inception, the Church of Abyssinia has been associated with the Church of Alexandria.. The relationship continued between them until some voices appeared calling for the need to separate the spiritual relationship between the two churches. This coincided with the spread of a mythical idea that emerged during the period of the Crusades about the kingdom of St. John. Whose kingdom lies behind the Muslim Countries. Since that news broke, the kings of Europe have begun to search for the kingdom to ally with it to confront Islamic forces, this alliance was followed by great efforts made by the Jesuit clergy in the hope of converting the Church of Abyssinia from its orthodox doctrine to the Catholic one.
